How to appear in ChatGPT and AI answers: GEO for small businesses

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot before opening Google. That created a new question: how do I get my business cited in those answers? The technical name for this practice is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). It is worth understanding, as long as you keep your feet on the ground.

What AI tools tend to use as a source

These tools combine what they learned in training with pages they can read in real time. In general, they tend to prefer content that is clear, current, specific and found on trustworthy sources. This is not a rule published by every company, so treat it as good practice, not as law.

What you can do

  1. Answer real questions. Write pages that answer, directly, what customers ask. Use question-style headings and put the answer at the start of the text.
  2. Make clear who you are. Company name, city, services, contact and authorship should be visible.
  3. Organize the site. Separate pages per service, internal links and structured data (FAQ, organization, article) help machines understand the content.
  4. Take care of your presence outside the site. A complete Google Business Profile, reviews and mentions on trustworthy sites reinforce who you are.
  5. Update and review. Old or wrong information hurts. Show the update date.
  6. Allow access to your content. If your site accidentally blocks crawlers, it may not be read. Check your robots.txt with someone who knows the subject.

How to measure without fooling yourself

Traffic coming from AI is still small on many sites and is not always labeled as such. Look at referral sources in your analytics, and also at how people describe finding you when they write to you. As a practical method, ask new customers how they found you.

Precautions

  • Be wary of anyone selling a "guaranteed position in ChatGPT".
  • Do not fill the site with unreviewed AI-generated text. See our article on ChatGPT prompts for marketing for how to review.
  • Do not put customer data into AI tools carelessly.

If your basic SEO is already in place, GEO is a good next step. If it is not, start with SEO for beginners.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. In practice, almost everything that helps SEO (clear, trustworthy, well-organized content) also helps AI systems understand your pages. GEO is an extra layer, not a replacement.

Can I guarantee that ChatGPT will cite my business?

No. Nobody can. You can raise the chance with useful content, clear data and a trustworthy presence on the web, but results vary.

How much traffic comes from AI?

It is still small for many sites and hard to measure. Check your analytics regularly and do not rely on a single report.
