What is SEO? Explained for beginners
In short: SEO is the set of practices that help your website and your business profile appear on Google, without paying per click, when someone searches for what you sell.
How Google decides who appears
Google tries to show the page that best answers what the person searched for. To do that, it looks at whether the content is useful, whether the site is fast and works well on mobile, whether other trustworthy pages talk about you and, in local searches, whether your address is close to the person searching.
What to do first
- Think about your customer's questions. What do they type before buying? "How much does...", "how to choose...", "near me".
- Answer those questions on your website, one page per topic, in clear language.
- Complete your Google Business Profile and ask for reviews.
- Take care of the technical basics: a fast site that opens well on mobile.
- Measure: connect Google Search Console and follow what appears.
What does not work
- Stuffing the page with repeated keywords.
- Copying text from other sites.
- Buying links or packages that "guarantee" first position.
- Publishing dozens of generic, useless texts.
SEO and AI
AI-generated answers also use clear and trustworthy content. The same care serves both. See how to appear in ChatGPT and AI answers.
SEO or ads?
It depends on your timeline and budget. SEO builds slowly and lasts; ads bring faster results but stop when you stop paying. Many businesses use both.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO free?
Appearing in organic results does not cost per click, but it takes time and work: content, a well-built website and a Google Business Profile.
How long does it take?
It usually takes months and varies by market and competition. Nobody honest promises first position within a fixed deadline.
Does SEO replace ads?
No. They are complementary. Ads bring faster results, and SEO builds a presence that continues afterwards.
